YIT gets stuck into Lithuanian infrastructure

LITHUANIA Finnish construction and development group YIT has been carrying out four road and street renovation contracts in Lithuania worth more than EUR 10 mln.

One project that began in March is the major reconstruction of an 11 km stretch of the 3218 district road between Narbutiškė and Akmenskynė, close to Telšiai east of Klaipėda. The contract was awarded by the Lithuanian Road Administration [LAKD] and should be carried out in twelve months.

“For this project we are building over 73,000 sqm of pavement, renovating the drainage, installing bus stops and speed bumps, and building a bridge over the river Pala,” reveals Mika Leppänen, who is in charge of YIT’s infrastructure projects.

In 2019 YIT Lithuania implemented almost two dozen road, street and logistics infrastructure projects in Lithuania. Among the biggest of these were: the reconstruction of A14 Vilnius–Utena (‘Molėtai’) highway, the construction of a 4 km section of road near the capital, the construction of modern container loading and storage facilities in Klaipėda, the reconstruction of an 11 kmstretch of the 165 road between Šilalė and Šilutė, and a bridge over the Šyša river. In addition, YIT has been contracted by the City of Vilnius to repair and maintain streets and courtyard pavements in the northern and western parts of the capital.

“Last year we carried out work on the development and modernisation of road infrastructure, implemented projects important for cargo transportation and increased the economic potential of the port city [of Klaipėda]. In the future, our aim is to expand more onto the seaport and railway infrastructure market. We are especially interested in strategic infrastructure projects, such as the construction of the Rail Baltica railway link,” adds Kęstutis Vanagas, the general manager of YIT Lithuania.
