Since its establishment in the 16th century, Vilnius University, as integral part of European science and culture has embodied the concept¬ of a classical university and the unity of studies and research.

Vilnius University is the oldest university in the Baltic states and one of the oldest in Northern Europe. It is the largest university in Lithuania.

Vilnius University Siauliai Academy

The beginning of higher education in Siauliai is considered to be since 1948 when Teacher Institute was established which soon became to be titled Siauliai Pedagogical Institute. In 1997 Siauliai Pedagogical Institute has been merged with a faculty of Kaunas Technological University, acting in Siauliai town, and contemporary Siauliai University began its activity as an independent higher education school. During last year’s overall high school made its important contribution to the educational and scientific field of Northern Lithuania and allowed to mobilize strong intellectual potential of scientists and teachers. As of 1 January 2021, Siauliai University becomes a sui generis core academic unit of Vilnius University — Vilnius University Siauliai Academy.

Application Procedure

All applicants have to fulfil general admission requirements and program specific requirements (if applicable).

If the applicant is currently studying in the final year of high school/secondary school and their school cannot issue a final graduation diploma before the application deadline, they should submit the recent transcript of academic records and the certificate indicating the date of receiving a final secondary school certificate.

  • Official translation of documents: All documents issued in a language other than English or Lithuanian should be supplemented with an official translation. The translation is considered to be official when it is bound together with the certified true copy of the original document and is confirmed by the translator’s signature. Documents issued in English or Lithuanian must be certified true copies and do not require translation.
  • Motivation letter: The applicant is required to submit a motivation letter (1200-4000 characters).
  • Language proficiency certificate: Because of the differences in study programs and their admission requirements, each case regarding the English language proficiency test is considered individually. If language certificate is required, for study programs taught in English: Cambridge English B2 First (First Certificate of English) 160+, IELTS 5.5+, iBT TOEFL 55+.
  • Application fee receipt
  • Recommendations (contacts of referees): 1 recommendation needed.
  • Certified copy of passport or ID card: The copy of passport or ID card must be certified.

After the applicant confirmed the decision to study, the applicant should transfer the tuition fee for the first study year of studies

After receiving the tuition fee from the applicant, the university International Relations Office prepares the necessary documents for National visa (D) and sends them by mail to the student.

Tuition fees for the first year of studies must be paid within 15 calendar days after the day the applicant receive an invitation to study (pre-acceptance letter).

Admission

Vilnius University publishes a competition to doctoral dissertation themes in five research areas in accordance with Vilnius University Regulation for Doctoral Studies.

Applicants must have a Master’s qualification degree or a higher education degree equivalent to it.

The application with all required enclosures must be send by e-mail.

Applicants have to submit to the Office of Doctoral and Postdoctoral Studies the following documents:

  1. an application addressed to the Rector;
  2. a copy of the passport or any other valid identification card;
  3. copies of the Master’s diploma or of a higher education diploma equivalent to it and their supplements;
  4. Curriculum Vitae;
  5. a completed questionnaire with a photo;
  6. a short description of prospective research project;
  7. a list of research works and their copies, conference presentations, works awarded at academic competitions (if there is any);
  8. recommendations by two academic referees from the topic of the relevant field of science (candidates to PhD studies in biochemistry have to submit one recommendation written by a supervisor of dissertation theme);
  9. 15 Eur instalment cheque.

Applicants also have to submit a consent to the processing of personal data at the University.

Also, applicants might be asked to submit a copy of the certificate on the recognition of higher education qualifications obtained abroad.

Other documents which, in the opinion of the applicant, are important, such as a certificate of completion of various courses or examinations passed at the doctoral level, are welcome too.

All documents issued in a language other than English, Russian or Lithuanian should be supplemented with an official translation. Doctoral committees can require to submit additional documents which are not provided for in Vilnius University regulations on doctoral studies.

Tuition Fee

Students admitted to state non-funded doctoral studies must pay the stated tuition fee per one academic year: for all fields of science (except Law) regular studies – 10 758 Eur and extended studies – 7172 Eur, for Law regular studies – 5788.50 Eur and extended studies – 3859 Eur.

There are many accommodation options for international students in Vilnius. We strongly suggest you to choose Vilnius University dormitories because they are situated as close to the academic campuses as possible, charge modest fees and give you a better opportunity to interact with other students.

Accommodation in Vilnius University dormitories is available only for Vilnius University students during the academic year (i.e., from September 1st until June 30th). Application for Accommodation must be submitted via online enrolment procedure (for exchange students), or via online admission procedure (for degree students).

Dormitories in Vilnius are situated in Saulėtekio, Olandų or Didlaukio streets. They are close enough to the faculties. The time that is necessary to reach a faculty or any other object depends on their geographical location and the traffic causes.

Vilnius University Šiauliai Academy dormitory is situated in Dubijos street, between Šiauliai Bus station and Train station. It is very close to the Academy institutes.
