Klaipėda University is a multidisciplinary educational institution, a national and Baltic Region leader in the field of marine sciences and studies integrated into international academic networks, fosterer of cultural heritage, and a center for lifelong learning.

Established on 1 January 1991, Klaipėda University started with three faculties; currently, its academic provision is delivered by three faculties and three research and study institutes.

The University has about 4,000 students. Over 34633 students have graduated from that Alma Mater, including doctors of sciences, members of the Seimas and the Government, executives of large companies, engineers, prominent cultural figures, performers, and educators.

Over 60 scientific research laboratories, a research vessel- laboratory Mintis, a research and training sailboat Brabander, and a yacht Odyssey as integral part of the KU marine research infra- structure play an important role in the University research activities; the KU community have access to under half a million copies of documents in the library funds; the University has its own publishing house and a botanical garden. The infrastructure is sufficient for the successful development of international level cultural activities, fundamental and applied research, and research and development projects in the fields of the humanities, physical, biomedical, technological, and social sciences.

Every year, the University implements over 60 international and national scientific projects, cooperates with academic and research partners in the countries of Europe and the world, and participates in the activities of international funds, programs, and networks.

Klaipėda University was established in the area unique from the economic, cultural, and geopolitical viewpoint: on the Lithuanian seacoast, in the only Lithuanian seaport which is to be developed as a metropolitan center at the national level and is to increase the international competitiveness of Lithuania as a maritime state.

Since 2008, Klaipėda University has been implementing a national program of the Marine Valley, an integrated science, studies, and business center for the development of the Lithuanian maritime sector, and thus consistently consolidating its leadership in the area of maritime sciences and technologies. As the final stage of the program, on 14 February 2018, a building of advanced laboratories of the Marine Research Institute was opened, boasting a contemporary research infrastructure intended for the development of fundamental and applied science, competitive in an international market, and for the training of highly qualified specialists for the Lithuanian maritime sector.

The research on the history and culture of East Prussia, Lithuania Minor (Prussian Lithuania), and Klaipėda Region carried out at the University provides information about the historical, linguistic, confessional, musical, and ethnic heritage.

The study programs presently implemented at Klaipėda University provide advanced university education and high professional qualification. Klaipėda University seeks to educate future specialists and personalities, to develop humanist and cultural values, and to promote a maritime mentality in the city and the nation.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR DEGREE STUDENTS

TO BECOME A STUDENT OF KLAIPĖDA UNIVERSITY:

1.      Register here: https://apply.ku.lt /

Application deadline is 30th of June for fall intake and 30th of November for spring intake.

2.      Select a study program. You are allowed to have 3 choices in order of your priorities.

3.      Upload required documents:

Copy of Passport 

If your name in the credential differs from the name in your passport, a valid proof of name change has to be submitted. A valid proof of name change is considered to be marriage certificate, divorce certificate, or another form of proof issued by a competent official body.

Proof of English language proficiency: IELTS > 5.5, TOEFL > 75, CEFR > B2. Please note that applicants – native English speakers or those who completed their previous education in English do not need to provide proof of English language proficiency.

Entry qualification documents: Higher school certificate for Bachelor/University Bachelor (a minimum of 3 years) degree certificate and its supplement for Master’s studies. Please note that minimum average grade (GPA) > 60%. Requirements for submission of documents may vary by country.

The entry qualification documents are accepted in the following languages: Lithuanian / English / Russian.

Often you can get a suitable transcript from your school. If this is not the case, you will need official translations along with verified copies of the original. A translation is considered to be official when it is bound to a certified true copy of the document in the original language and is attested by the translator’s signature.

The documents must be legalized (Apostille) by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country where the documents were issued. This requirement does not apply for the documents issued in the EU and Belarus, Ukraine.

You must take verified copies of the entry qualification documents along with you when you finally go to the university. The university reserves the right to request for the originals of your credentials for verification purposes at any time during the processing of your application.

4.      Pay the application fee. For citizens of the EU member states or countries of the European Economic Area (Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Belarus, Armenia, and Azerbaijan), as well as those who have a permanent residence permit in the Republic of Lithuania: €55. 5.      Provided all the necessary documents have been submitted and the fees have been paid, the application is forwarded to the Academic Evaluation Commission for consideration. The Commission evaluates applications on the basis of applicant’s academic performance, motivation, and other established criteria and takes a decision on the applicant’s admission to studies.

6.      Provided the Commission takes a positive decision, University issues the Conditional letter.

7.      Pay the tuition fee and upload the bank statement.

8.      Once the tuition fee is paid, University issues Letter of Acceptance and prepares all needed documents for your chosen embassy.

PHD PROGRAM

Foreign and Lithuanian citizens are eligible for state-funded studies.

The Application fee for PhD programs is for citizens of the EU member states or countries of the European Economic Area (Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Belarus, Armenia, and Azerbaijan), as well as those who have a permanent residence permit in the Republic of Lithuania: €50. For other students: €80. (Application fee is nonrefundable).

ADMISSION RULES AND SELECTION CRITERIA

1. Persons with master’s or equivalent qualification degree are eligible for the admission.

 2. Applicants have to participate in the meeting for the interview. The committee ranks the applicants based on the cumulative score resulting from the assessment criteria (table below) and the interview.

3. Candidates who failed to obtain the minimum threshold cumulative score are not admitted even if the vacancies are still open.

4. In case of vacancies are still left after completion of the first admission stage additional competition of admission to doctoral studies can be arranged according the same admission order.

 5. Applicants that didn’t pass the procedure of admission to doctoral studies can apply again not earlier then after one year.

6. The Committee of Doctoral studies takes decisions in all arbitrary cases.

1 Topic of the research project of doctoral studies should be chosen from the list of dissertation topics for the study period 2019/2023. Research project should be written in English and should not exceed six pages of A4 format including pictures and Reference list (font size - 12 pt, line spacing - 1,5 line).

 Following elements are necessary in research project:

1) Title;

2) Introduction and state of the art;

3) Relevance and innovative character of topic, specification and definition of scientific problem (research subject);

4) aim, goals and objectives of research;

5) Research methods, necessary material and equipment of research, additional (planned) financial costs, emerging in the process of research;

6) Description of the activities (preliminary activity plan);

7) expected results and provisional publication list;

8) Short description of related research projects in KU;

9) Expert list (national and international), necessary/relevant for dissertation;

10) References.

2 Doctoral studies research project evaluation criteria:

● Comprehensiveness of the dissertation topic presentation.

● Relevance and novelty of the planned study.

● Clarity in definition of the study object.

● Relevance of the proposed research methods, preliminary work plan and the expected results.

3 Interview evaluation criteria.

● Level of general scientific education and specific knowledge of the chosen object of study.

● Ability to present study objectives and tasks in a clear and logical way.

● Sufficient knowledge of English.

4 Publications are assessed in accordance with their significance and author’s contribution.

 5 Candidates obtained the score less than “8” (good) are not accepted for doctoral studies

 

ACCOMMODATION

KLAIPĖDA UNIVERSITY invites STUDENTS to take up residence in one of the two DORMITORIES of Klaipėda University.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS willing to take up residence in a dormitory shall fill in an application and submit a receipt of the paid deposit and a receipt of the accommodation fee paid for the whole semester (the fee shall not be refunded). The accommodation fee shall be refunded in the established procedure only if the student has not been issued a visa. ERASMUS PROGRAMME STUDENTS shall submit a receipt of the paid deposit and a receipt of the dormitory accommodation fee paid for the first current month of residence in the dormitory.

STUDENTS OF FULL-TIME SESSION-BASED STUDIES shall submit a filled-in and signed application for dormitory accommodation.

Payment procedure: A deposit for the accommodation in the dormitory shall be transferred to the account.
