Introduction
Lithuanian Sports University (LSU), founded in 1934, is a specialised public higher education institution that has developed its unique traditions in sport, leisure and health sciences.
With its mission to contribute to the sustainable development of society through international-level research and academic excellence, LSU is known as a leading academic and research centre in sports science in the Baltic Sea region. Starting with the enrolment of 100 students, the LSU has developed and expanded over the years and decades into an institution with nearly 2000 students.
The LSU offers 19 degree study programmes at all three study cycles, mainly in sport science, where studies, research and practice are closely interconnected. Among the LSU graduates, there are many distinguished scientists, world-renowned coaches, famous athletes, and prominent public figures.
A great number of the LSU students and graduates have become champions and prize-winners of the Olympic Games, world and European championships, among them are the twice European boxing champion Algirdas Šocikas, the winner of the Olympic gold medal and world basketball champion Modestas Paulauskas, the winners of the Olympic gold medals discus thrower Virgilijus Alekna. and basketball players Voldemaras Chomičius and Rimantas Kurtinaitis.

4.Doctoral studies
4.1.BIOLOGY: PHYSIOLOGY
PhD studies in the area of Biology at LSU started in 1993. In the period of 1993 – 2014, 65 doctors of science were trained. In 2011, joint doctoral studies in Biological Sciences of Lithuanian Sports University and the University of Tartu (Estonia) were launched. Joint LSU and UT PhD studies in Biology consolidated research in the area of Biology, and they ensure more integrated and substantial investigations of scientific problems in biology.
Research of doctoral students in Biological Sciences involves many branches of biology: Physiology / Biomechanics / Bioinformatics / Histology / Genetics / Animal anatomy and morphology / Animal physiology / Endocrinology / Immunology / General pathology / Gerontology / Biochemistry / Neurology / Anatomy / morphology / Epidemiology / Molecular biophysics.
The duration of doctoral studies is 4 years.
4.2.EDUCATION: PHYSICAL EDUCATION, MOTOR LEARNING, SPORT*
PhD studies in Education (Social Sciences) started in 1993. In the period of 1993 – 2014, 47 doctors of science were trained. Since 2011, LSU conducts joint doctoral studies in Education with the Lithuanian University of Educational Studies, Kaunas University of Technology and Šiauliai University.
Doctoral students in Education conduct research, covering the following areas: Physical education, motor learning, sport/ Pedagogy and didactics/ Teacher training/ Research methods/ Social welfare and support for disabled people.
The duration of doctoral studies is 4 years.
